Who Is The New Elected District Attorney In L.A. County And What Is His Background?
Jackie Lacey has been the Los Angeles District Attorney for Los Angeles since 2012. Recently however, George Gascon ran against her, and won. He was sworn in on December 7, 2020. He is of Cuban descent and has a law enforcement background, which is interesting, considering some of the initial directives he has put into place. He was in the military, joined the L.A.P.D., and moved up the ranks. He was eventually named Chief of Police for Mesa, Arizona. When he later came back to California, he was working under then Mayor Gavin Newsom, who is now Governor. Gascon was made Chief of Police for San Francisco in 2009. Kamala Harris appointed him to be the District Attorney for San Francisco in 2011, when she became the Attorney General.
When Does The New DA Take Office?
Gascon was sworn in on December 7, 2020. He immediately put in place several directives that are already proving to be both forward thinking, corrective and thoughtful, yet controversial. Though there are many people in the community who are voices for social change, there are many people within the law enforcement community (prosecutors, police officers, and the like) who believe that some of these policies now being presented will cause a decay of society and an increase in crime.
